Default Rear Differential Drain and Cover clean

Easy Quesiton.. How clean do I need to get the inside of the Rear Dirrential cover when I am draining and refilling. I have been scraping to get the previous RTV off but the previous owner seriously loaded it up on both sides and that stuff does not come off easy.. What can I use to clean it off with? I am using a razor blade scraper..

i use a drill with wire brush. comes out like new.
as mentioned, use brake cleaner to clean out the gears. just be sure to use a rag to soak up any puddles before you fill it.

if its jacked up rotate one wheel with the transmission in neutral, if the other wheel spins in the oppisite direction then you have an open diff and do not need friction modifier. If both wheels spin the same direction then you have a limited slip or "posi" Also look in your glove box for a tag that says you must use the additive in the rear diff. Most xj's equipped with a trac lock had a tag in the glove box
