I had a bad wire on my 97. It was were the wire loom runs from the body to the hatch. Mine was easy to find because my rear wiper and plate light didn't work either.

Check continuity on the grid. If you don't have it then work back to the wire at the hatch. When I did mine, the wire was completly severed inside the insulation past near the commector at the top. I only figured it out because I just decided to pull the wire out and it started falling apart.
Good luck.

alright. afte further looking at the original issue ive found a wire in between the hatch and the body worn (black w white stipe). now when replacing the wire do i need to do the entire wire? does it run the length of the body of the jeep? is there a harness that im going to need or is it just the wire itself? sorry for being a dumbass im far from a mechanic!

Just replace the wire. The rubber sleeve between hatch & body, Doors & body. Are where most wires become worn. And usually the first place I check (along with using a volt meter.)
