Rear cargo light switch
There's not a plunger switch like the rest of the doors, that reads when the hatch is open/closed. On all 97+ XJ's, the light itself is the on/off switch. Open your hatch, and literally push your light as if it's a button (it actually is). If your light was off, this action will turn it on. Do it again, and it turns off. If you turn it on and leave it on, when you close the hatch, it'll turn off just like an ordinary plunger activated light does.
The sensor is the same one that activates the red light in your gauge cluster that tells you your hatch is open when your ignition is either on acc or run. If it's the sensor that's bad, you need to replace the handle and locking mechanism in your hatch.

It is in the latch assembly, but I don't think you can replace just the sensor. I'm pretty sure you have to replace the whole assembly. Just go down to the JY and find one if you can. It'll be a lot cheaper than going through anyone else.
Well I thought it was a switch or short somewhere, butI put a bulb in the cargo lamp and dome lamp and now it all works. Didn't know a missing bulb would break the circuit, nice and easy fix.

I have a 96 XJ im dealing with the same/similar issue:
the cargo light in the back of the XJ will not come on when the hatch is opened. It will not come on when I push the button to turn it on manually. However it will come on when I open one of the front two doors.
Id like it to come on when the hatch is opened, as I am sure it is supposed to. or at the very least be able to turn it on once the button is pushed.

Check to make sure the bulb is making full contact. My problem was solved when I installed a bulb,it completed the circuit.

well the bulb appears to be okay. It is in there tight. I can push in on the ends of the tabs where the bulb connects and the light goes out.
button appears to be working (as in pushing in and out) but nothing happens when I press it.
If the light is on with a front door open and I hit the button on the rear cargo light....shouldnt the rear cargo light go out?
