The rear ceiling mounted cargo light in my 2000 xj would come on when I opened the front doors, but I could not get it to come on by pressing the lense, after screwing around with it I got it to light up but now it will not shut off, after the light began smoking I took it out and left it unplugged, does anyone know where I can pick up another light assembly, aftermarket if possible so I don't get screwed by a stealership

 

Dealer or scrap yard, I doubt the parts houses will carry it.

 

Huh, I didn't know it would do that - the cargo light in my 97 comes on with the doors, but not the tailgate. I'll try pressing the lens... it would be really handy when unloading the dogs (bassets don't jump!).

 

On my 98 you can choose whether it comes on or not. Open the lift gate, press it and every time from there on it comes on when the lift gates open
