Default Rear bumper jammed into liftgate. How to fix?

Hey Everybody,

I was out playin around coming down off of a really steep obstacle and bottomed out on my rear bumper HARD. It's wedged it up into my lift gate, making it nearly impossible to open and a horrifying sound when going down the road. I loosened up the bumper at all mounting points and tried to get it lowered back down but I'm afraid the mounts on the jeep may have gotten bent. The bumper is aftermarket and super stout, it does not look like it's bent at all.

Anyone else had this happen to them?

Look underneath at the floor/subframe. If the bumpers pushed in that hard the subframe's probably showing signs of damage.Maybe even hitting the leaf-springs. JMO

Mine is mounted via the steel brackets you have mentioned which run inside the unibody frame as well as bolting on to the back of it. I have inspected the heck out of it and can't eyeball where the bend is. The bumper and lift gate had a very low clearance to begin with, I'm wondering if my best bet might be to cut 1/8" off the bottom of the lift gate... Is that safe to do? How far can I cut into it without compromising the construction?

no its not safe to cut the lift gate its not built like a fender you will destroy its integrity i would suggest taking it off entirely and truing the brackets and bumper and while its off inspect your subframe and anything else close to it if that doesnt work it sounds like you need a bigger hammer

i think ur gioing to have to take it off and check it with a straight edge. a slight bend towards the frame rail will throw it off a lot towards te bumper
