Rear Axle Seal and Gas smell

Rear Axle Seal and Gas smell
1. The rear axle seal has failed the second time in only 4,000 miles, oozing grease on the brake shoes etc. Do these seals vary much in quality? If so, what's recommended?
2. A pretty strong gas smell in the cabin ONLY for the first five minutes of driving and ONLY when it's warm outside. Seems to be coming from the left side. The (rusty) fuel line running behind the lefts-side rocker panel has been replaced — made no difference. Injectors checked (but will re-check).
XJ Sport 2001, 4.0 L, 137K
