My Jeep is Stock everything
5x4.5 bolt pattern
Front Axle Dana 30, High Pinion, Reverse Cut, 27-spline axleshafts
Rear Axle Dana 35, non c-clip, with anti-lock braking system (ABS)
Which would you rather buy and rebuild?
$75 - complete rear from a 88 bronco II 3.73 gears drum to drum
$75 - Ford 8.8 from an explorer. It is a disk brake axle with the calipers and e-brake setup. It does not have rotors and the carrier is out of the axle
Either way im gonna have to rebuild it so im thinking, I like the idea of calipers and e-brake
but the more complete it is the less i feel i might have to do "for direct bolt on application"
or already take the hassle out if it and just go rebuilt.
$2400 - Rebuilt Ford 9" 31 spline axle, all new 4.11 gears, brgs, seals, Detroit locker
I dont know which gear set up i want or need.
Any suggestions as which way to go and budget friendly upgrades for the rear end?
Once a month trail rider, mudder and small rocks budget

Don't know where you got the price for the 9" but I got several laying around I need to sell if that's what they are bringing.
Don't waste your time with the broII axle, they barely work with stock size tires. The exployer 8.8 is a good unit, almost as strong as a 9" and can be had complete for around $150. You can swap out the clutches on the factory LSD to adjust bias to the point it's almost a spool. You loose a bit of ground clearance and the pinion hangs a bit low but it's worth it in the long run.

the gears have to be the same front to back so you most likely have 3.55 gears in the front so you would have to get that in back as well but tell us what you want it to be in the end and we can better help

well ideally i want it to be the most baddest thing on the trail.
realistically...
i think I want a long/short arm in the front and back (where one tire can extend at one angle and the other be parallel or at a higher angle and still move) - 4" lift with 31x10.5 tires - snorkel and bushwacker flares with a "full sunroof" (extends the length/width of the jeep) - roll cage/bar - winch & grill/brush guard - skid plates/body armor and "line-x" type inside and out...
Not too much to ask for, I dont think
would love to have the bullet proof ford 9" or 8.8 with disc brakes in the rear
i dont want to have to worry about breaking something...
im a once a month trail rider, small rocks and mudd type
but only have income for driving on the highway
granted for me i could do this almost stock, but i like the added security feeling i get from having stronger parts plus it looks better and makes it sound cooler to name off good parts
So, this is what i want and I am gonna get it all eventually - but i want it to be functional exactly like this, so if i have to upgrade one part to make one of these items fit/work properly, then so be it.
just dont want to have to pay to keep fixing something cause i forgot to / didnt upgrade something else
