Default After market radio.

I'm been looking to upgrade my 2001 XJ stock am/fm/cassette/cd stereo(no amp) for awhile now. Since the current one has all of a sudden decided to play my CD's and radio at the same time, I figure it's time. Wanting to keep everything around $100, I'm thinking of getting this one.

For those who might know, Am I safe to assume with the installation kit , this will be plug and play(minus the ground apparently) and completely fill in the entire area where the old one is? Apologies if these are stupid questions, but I've never done any after market radio installation for any vehicle I've owned.. Thanks.

It is my understanding that any "plug and play" radio will come with a plug that plugs into the factory plug but it still has to be wired to the harness for the radio. Easy to do out of the car though.

thanks for the quick reply. So you're saying the plug provided in the kit needs to be matched and wired to the new radio wires and then that plugs into the existing harness?...

I believe one of the ordering options with Crutchfield is a pre-wired adapter, making it plug-n-play.

Yes, but lawsoncl may be correct in which case you could decide if you want to do it yourself or have it done.

+1 on Crutchfield, especially if this is your first install.
Excellent customer service.

Crutchfield is the best place to go, as they give you all of the equipment you need for free or very inexpensively. Normally, that stuff would cost you $20-$40 if you buy it somewhere else. They even make a Double DIN kit for the Cherokee XJ now if you want to modify your dash.

I bought almost the same radio. JVC make great radios. My previous radio lasted from 2006 and through 4 different cars lol. Even if you didn't get the pre-wired harness, the process is VERY easy and can be done with butt connectors and a pair of vice grips. Just match the colors of the radio harness to the same color on the adapter harness.

Just thought I'd give an update to this thread. Ended up going with this receiver.

https://www.crutchfield.com/p_105KDT...T.html?tp=5684

I got the custom wiring harness which was about $25. Well worth it IMO. Besides having to splice in the ground wire, it truly is a plug and play. Took me about 1/2 hr start to finish. Was surprised of an apparent improvement in the sound even though I haven't upgraded the speakers.

Only cons to the receiver for me is the more complex operation required for setting thing up or making adjustments, but considering all the capabilities that are packed into the unit, I'm sure I'll get use to it. Plan to spend some time today learning all the ins and outs and getting my phone synced up to it. Need to thank the forum and it's members here for pointing me in the right direction and offering their advice when I needed the assistance.

I'm not sure why you didnt like that fact that your CD player & radio would play at the same time.....

That sounds like a party to me.... Remix style.

You can pick them up... even at some Walmarts that have an automotive section. you look for your year/model of vehicle... and then buy the wiring/plug adapter (fairly cheap) then following the schematic included, tells you how to wire it to your vehicle. Then plug and go.
Done it a number of times in the past.. .pretty easy to do.
