Default Rear Axle?

I am looking to get a 3" lift to go with my new tires. But i need to know what rear axle i have. dana 35, or chrylser 8 1/4". I have a stock 1996 cherokee sport 4.0l i6 4x4. Does anyone know?

Not necessarily...I have a stock 96 with the 8.25. Post a pic or just go to the sticky "Helpful Links" at the top of this forum for axle identification pics.

not all of them had the 35 mines a 93 and i got the chrysler. basically what you need to do is look at your rear end and if the bottom of it is flattened then you have the 8.25 if its more rounded then you have the 35 and i believe that only the 35 came with abs so if you have abs then you have the 35 and if you dont then you have the 8.25 but i could be wrong about that. but the best thing to do would be to do some leg work and search the forum and google instead of having us do all of the work for you oh also if you lay under there and measure the diameter of the axle tube if its 3 inches then you have the 8.25 if its 2.5inches then you have the 35

If you have ABS you have the 35. If you have no ABS you could have both.

If the bottom of the axle is rounded you have the 35, if it's flat you have the Chrysler.

If the axle tube is 3 inches you have the Chrysler.

You can also requrest your build sheet and it will tell you how it rolled out of the factory: http://www-5.jeep.com/wccsapp/univer...ull&category=U

* 1990 – 1996 : Dana 35, c-clip, ABS or non-ABS.
* 1997 – 2001 : Dana 35, c-clip, ABS.
* 1991 – 1996 : Chrysler 8.25", c-clip, non-ABS, 27-spline axleshafts.
* 1997 – 2001 : Chrysler 8.25", c-clip, non-ABS, 29-spline axleshafts.
* 1987 – 1990 : Dana 44, non-abs, 30-spline axleshafts.

this is your best bet when it comes to finding out what your's is you could also call the dealer with your vin
