Rear axle
I'm going to assume you have a 8.25 rear axle..........
While you have the axle shafts out,(transfer case in neutral) rotate the ring and pinion, and listen or feel for any rough movement in the bearings.
Check the teeth on the ring gear for any chips or rough wear.
if all this is good, then no need to replace anything further.
Check your axle shafts out at the ends for any scoring or rough marks where the bearings run on it, also for grooves worn by the seals.
if there is any, get a replacement shaft, or you can use a repair bearing assembly that moves the bearing and seal further out on the shaft to run in a different spot.
Using a slide-hammer with the proper axle bearing attatchment makes removing the axle tube bearings alot easier.(available as a loaner tool from various auto parts stores.....EG: AutoZone)
