Default Really disapointed with my 3" rustys lift...what to do next?

got my 91 xj and as previously posted my 3" rustys kit with procomp xtreme muds on 15x8 3.75 offset rub the back of the fenders when turning (I cut the fronts as they rubbed there too.)

A few questions:

1. I noticed the rustys 3" coils were like 1" taller next to the stock coils when I got the stock ones out....is the 3" lift made due to the stiffer spring rate? Or did I get wrong coils?

2. It is listed you dont "need" pitman arms, track bars, or upper/lower control arms with a 3" kit.... Well I'd like to get better control and better ride so...
a. should I get all of these replaced for a 3" kit?
b. With budget concerns, can I do lower with out the uppers?
c. Tracbar before the arms?

Please let me know what you think....a 3" kit was "supposed" to clear 31" tires "no problem"...

does it sit level? some companys make the lift from stiffer spring rates aswell as taller springs. did you measure stock height before the lift? i would google the stock height of a 91 xj, then measure yours from the same point and see how much it lifted it. (take into acount the tires size aswell)

i would try and find a adjustable track bar and lower control arms. by me I can find the arms used for about 20-50$, and the pitman arm for 20$.... just to keep it cheap. (lower ones are more important then uppers with only 3" lift)

I had a 90 XJ with a 4" budget lift and i would rub a lot flexed... but never on the street. never had one with a 3".

hope any of this helps.

The tires could be part of your problem, a guy I know has some 31" Pro Comp all-terrains and they're about an inch bigger than my "31s"

A few questions:

1. I noticed the rustys 3" coils were like 1" taller next to the stock coils when I got the stock ones out....is the 3" lift made due to the stiffer spring rate? Or did I get wrong coils?

Its a combination of a taller spring and a higher spring rate; higher spring rate=harsher ride

2. It is listed you dont "need" pitman arms, track bars, or upper/lower control arms with a 3" kit.... Well I'd like to get better control and better ride so...
a. should I get all of these replaced for a 3" kit?
the single biggest thing would be the stock track bar, the stocker on 3" is going to pull the axle towards the driver's side, put lateral tension on the control arms and can make your ride worse. After installing a proper adjustable track bar, my Jeep rides a ton better. At 3" I wouldn't worry about anything but the track bar or LCAs
b. With budget concerns, can I do lower with out the uppers?
While I'd recommend adjustable lower Control arms, they aren't going to improve the ride or control any unless your stock bushings are shot, however they will correct your caster so they are definitely to be considered
c. Tracbar before the arms?
absolutely

I think the biggest issue you're having is the tires, pro-comp tires typically measure larger than other brands for the same size. I have 31x10.50 Bighorns and they fit great with 3" Your backspacing could also be a factor as less BS = increased scrub radius.
All that being said I think the single biggest thing you could do to get an improved ride on 3" of lift is get some quality shocks. Either Monroe, Doetsch-Tech, Old Man Emu or RE Monotubes without breaking the bank(going to a true high-quality shock such as Bilstein, Fox, FOA, King, etc)

well if he gets the distance from the center of the rotor to the bottom of the wheel well then tire size wouldnt matter anyway.

Might have switched to a 4" lift to get rid of rubbing issues...

I know rusty's has 2 different coils for 3" lift, Normal and HD. the normal set is 180lb spring rate and the HD is 230lb i believe. The XJ stock spring rate is 180lbs IIRC so i went with the normal rusty 3" coils when i put my lift together.

Have you thought about cutting your fenders more to fit your tires

I've got the Rusty's 3" with the heavy duty coils. I had 31's on them for a while and they were fine. Only time they rubbed was on the back flares when i flexed it out. But those were all terrains. Now i have 33 mickey thompson atz's (also all terrains). And my buddy's got a pro comp 3" with 32" I think pirelli mt's and he sits at the same height I do. It's probly just the tire you have on there, in general mt's are a little taller than at's

simple buy a shakle/puck budget boost and go up another inch and a half or so....that's how i do it.. buy tires lift to suit hahahaha.... as far as arms go i'm at about 5in and still have stock uppers without issue and you really need to at least drop the track bar but i would get an aftermaket one
