Reading error codes
Hello everyone I just purchased a 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ for my wife. She always wanted one so I went out shopped around and thought I found a good desl. The engine light was on when I bought. Guy I bought it from said it's an easy fix. So far I've been to two different shops. Both have told me it's an amount of electrical work. These are the codes that they were able to diagnos. P1491 radiator fan, P065 AC Clutch relay, P0443 Evap/Purge solenoid, P0700 Trans fault present, P0705 Check shifter signal. All say open or short. I was told it can be very expensive to fix. Can anyone he

Welcome!
The first step to any P07xx code repair is to pull the Neutral Safety Switch, disassemble/clean, add fresh Dielectric grease and reassemble. It's a common procedure with many write-ups here and elsewhere on the WWW.
With the engine running, disconnect the coolant temp sensor connector (at the thermostat housing). The fan should common on. Post up your results.
P065 AC Clutch relay...missing a digit here. Possible bad A/C relay in the Power Distribution Center (PDC). It's under the hood, passenger side.
P0443 Evap/Purge solenoid
Check for a loose connector or cracked/broken wires at the connector. The vapor cannister is under the rig near the fuel tank on the drivers side.

It certainly can be. If you take it to the typical shop that knows very little about Cherokees and pay them to dink around and spend hours of billable shop time blindly searching for the problems, I'm sure it will be.
On the other hand, if you get yourself to a good Cherokee forum, get advice from knowledgeable members as above, follow instructions, communicate results and progress, it might be pretty close to free.
It's always possible that there is something wrong that is major, something intrinsically expensive, but odds are it's a bunch of small things that you can fix with help from this forum.
It will be like peeling an onion, one layer at at time, one problem at a time.
By the way, please congratulate your wife on her good taste in vehicles.

Local Dodge dealership wanted to replace my ECM for 1000 bucks. Turns out it was a bad ignition coil. 30 bucks and 10 min worth of work. Point is, Frank and Mark are right. You can probably fix this without shop fees.
