OK cool.
Good input here. Haven't done it yet, but gearing up. Just bought Permatex Black RTV. Little confusing, there's black, red, blue, and gray. Stopped at wal-mart, out of the blue and gray.
Looked at the 'Super-Tech' 75-90w. Comes in quarts in an easy (looking) to use squirt bottle. Doing some conversions, it would take ~2 of these quarts to get 4.3 pints. Also saw a 1 gallon jug. Can't think of an easy way to get that in my fill hole though.
The Haynes manual calls for 4.3 pints of lubricant.
Thanks!

I personally recommend a Felpro paper gasket with a THIN layer of RTV black (oil resistant) on each mating surface - The purpose behind this being a double layer - the paper gasket to make sure there is a continuous gasket seal, and the RTV to fill any scratches/imperfections in the housing surfaces. As previous posters have said, biggest thing is to make sure the gasket surfaces are clean and shiny, with all oil removed from the surface before RTV application.
Last time I did mine, I only waited 5 minutes using the paper gasket/RTV method, tightened up, and filled right away. Hasn't leaked a bit.
As far as maintenance wise, 60K is I believe the recommended interval, but I try to do mine once a year when used for offroading, and immediately following a water crossing if I think water may have gotten in.
