Default Re-wiring Speakers

Alright, I've been trying to get a CD player to work in my Jeep for a few months now. I've neglected to take it to a professional because I have better things to spend my money on and I like doing things myself.

Background - 99 XJ limited, and I believe I dont have the Infinity system, if I did it's been ripped out.

I've got my aftermarket head unit all wired up correctly (double and triple checked) and I have absolutely no sound coming from anywhere. I've researched and researched and everyone talks about the factory amplifier. I do not have one, not sure if there was one there, or if the PO took it out.

So, I figured the simple solution would be to rewire all the speakers. From people who have done this whats the best guage wire to use, and best way to run the wires. Should I run a wire straight from the positive and negative terminals off each speaker and splice them directly into the corresponding wires on the wiring harness?

Any input would be great thanks!

I usually just buy the thicker of the rolls at home depot, 14 gauge I think. I would run them brand new off the deck to their respective speakers, positive to positive, negative to negative.

Well, figured out my problem. The head unit was faulty. I have no factory amp, so when the head unit wasn't working I figured something esle was up. When you pulled the harness halfway out of the head unit and pushed it to the right, the sound would come on. Then, when you would let it go, the sound would go off.

Looks like its back to Wal-Mart tomorrow, good thing I kept my receipt.
