I have something rattling under my jeep and its not the exhaust. I cant figure out what it is. When i crawl under it while its running i still cant see whats rattling. I grab stuff and shake it and nothing rattles. Its got me. I hear it when im sitting at a stop and slightly while im taking off. Does anyone know what it might be or experienced this problem? Any info would help out. Thanks.

I would look closely at the exhaust system. Heat shields, muffler, cat. Also check the tail pipe near the shackle, receiver hitch, gas tank skid plate. All of those have rattled on 6 different jeeps of mine at different times. Good luck!

Mine does this also. Can't seem to pin point it except for one rattle. My exhaust was hitting the trans xmember. Fixed that now its coming from somewhere else.

I had been plagued by a rattling in the back of my Jeep at 1700 RPMs, and sometimes at a stoplight. I found out today what it was. The tail-pipe has been hitting the gas tank skid-plate.
I know where I'm going tomorrow.

My 4x4 handle rattles too. But its not that. I push it down and that stops but the other rattle is there still. So its not that. And i just took my cat and old muffler off so i know its not them. Before i did that my cat and muffler did rattle. I checked the rest of my exhaust and its all tight and doesnt rattle on anything. Its sounds like its coming from the tranny tunnel. Almost sounds like something is loose. But i crawled under it one day and pushed up on the tranny thinkin that the tranny mount might be shot but it all was tight. Like i said it has me stumped.

I have the same problem and could not figure it out for a while. It happens during idle. I pushed on the 4wd lever and it stopped. When the lever is in 2wd mode it has a little play between 2wd and 4wd position. I havent come up with a fix yet except for pushing down or slightly up.

There's an exhaust hangar right near the crossmember that the tranny sits on, and it's pretty common for it to rot away and let the pipe sit on the crossmember. At higher RPM the amount of vibration isn't enough to cause a loud knocking, but when you're sitting still or just taking off, there's enough vibration to cause that knocking sound.
Alternatively, when you hear it and you're sitting inside the vehicle, try grabbing your 4WD selector handle and wiggling it around a bit to see if it stops the noise, too.
