Random Shut Off and No Start
So I was driving down the road and my 2000 Cherokee shut off; the rpm's fell to zero, and it shut off with the lights staying on. I pushed it into a parking lot, and it started after a few tries and ran for about a minute before shutting off again. It took a good twenty minutes to get it started again.
It ran fine the next day until I was heading home and it randomly shut off again. It took maybe ten tries to get it running, and I drove two or three miles and it shut off again. I drove it home after I got it running again.
It seem to only happen when the Jeep gets plenty hot, but is still quite random.
Any advice?

Well, I will throw my two cents in here....
as I found out the hard way , replace batt, starter, CPS etc, relays, coil, everything and anything related to ignition/starting system.....
I found the MAIN problem!
wires UNDERNEATH the fuse/relay panel-box in the engine compartment which plug UP into where the AUTO-SHUTDOWN relay plugs in were loose and not making contact to the relay.
once I re-crimped the connectors and pushed them back into the slots and MADE SURE they connected well onto the blades of the relay. went to the drivers seat turned key and VROOOOOOM! started right up.
just my two cents.

The fact that it died, then started again after sitting awhile, suggests the Crank Position Sensor is failing and stops working when it gets hot. Thus, I would suggest testing the Crank Position Sensor.

I'm with Klutch...But. I'd have the codes read. Don't think the CPS will throw a code, but you have a cam sensor that might, and ruling that out makes sense before going after the CPS.
I might bang around the relays CPN mentioned and see if that changes anything.

I had the same problem with my XJ and got the CPS checked. I was told it was still good but kept on having the same problems. I decided to replace it and I had no more problems. No more shut offs.
Replace CPS.

Sorry it took so long. There are no codes at all. So I'm thinking by the way it's acting. CPS
Standard any good?

Testing the sensor where Id start. Even if you replace it and issue remain at least you eliminate it out of the picture.

I live in Michigan. Seems like when it gets crazy cold wire connections that are shady really act up. I start my jobs with the cheapest way possible... wiggling and checking wires and switching around relays. Sometimes the relays get gunked up. Sometimes condensation during the cold can push apart already poor connections when they freeze or disrupt them when they thaw. Good luck.
