Random power loss

Random power loss
I have a 98 xj 4.0 and I randomly lose power like the fuel cuts out for a sec or two if I take my foot off the gas I usualy get power back when I put foot back on. If I am to leave my foot on then I get this clunking sound from the front. Does anyone know what this might be?
