Random no crank
I searched but maybe not well enough. Jeeps cranks and starts fine. Back out driveway and realize I forgot something. Pull in driveway and shut off. Run in house and back out. Turn key and nothing. Everything works just doesn't crank. Swapped start relay. Banged on starter. Checked connections. Still no crank. I tried 10 or so times then it starts. Shut it off and start it several more times. It starts fine the next few days.
I start it to leave work today and drive across the parking lot to our other shop and shut it off. Go in for a few minutes. Come out and same as before no crank. All lights, radio, gas etc work. Do all the same stuff as before nothing. Tried cranking a dozen or so times. Then all of a sudden it cranks and starts right up. When I get home I shut it off and crank it back up several times, it starts every time.
It's an 2001 xj 4x4 4.0l auto. 189k. Any one have this happen? No crank no start, then all of a sudden it starts. Seems like it happens after starting and shutting it off soon after.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Quite likely the NSS. Next time this happens, hold the key in the Start position while moving the shift lever back and forth between Park and Neutral.
If it cranks, you have found the problem and can decide how you want to correct it.
Failure to crank doesn't guarantee the NSS is good and you go to the next diagnostic step.

Thanks for the input. I see the nss comes up a lot. Mine only does it under the above conditions. I didn't know if there was something more common for that condition.
When I figure out what it is I'll post what I find.
Thanks.
