I get radio static when I am in an area of weak signal. What amazes me is when I step on the brake it quits. I can't ride my brake around of course. Who know what will fix that.

Sounds like the radio is making its quality ground somehow via the brake switch or the POer monkey'd around with the wiring.

The first thing to check are ground terminations under, in and around the dash in addition to the engine compartment. Check all the ground terminals for corrosion and/or looseness. Remove and clean any suspicious ground terminals with sandpaper and their mating surfaces then clean with alcahol.

Also pull the radio and make sure the ground wire connector is plugged into the radio. Its a single wire with a single connector. Check that connector also for corrosion, spread contacts, etc.

Add some dielectric grease to those connections while you're cleaning them up, EXCEPT THE ANTENNA CONNECTION.
