All OEM related XJ specific tech. Examples, no start, general maintenance or anything that's stock.
2 years ago I bought my first ever Jeep (2000 XJ). I was always under the assumption it had one radiator for both the engine coolant and ATF cooling.
Most maintenance is done at a 4x4 shop nearby. Recently had the engine radiator replaced and I only now noticed the car appears to have 2 radiators installed. I marked them on the attached pictues as 1 (closest to the grill) and 2 (closest to the engine bay, this one got replaced).
The lines going into 1 are aluminium and the ones going into 2 are rubber hoses. To my understanding this would mean 1 is a seperate transmission cooler and 2 is the engine coolant radiator.
Is this assuption correct, and does anybody know this is factory feature or most likely an aftermarked mod? The lines running towards both radiators look like they always have been in their position, but given the cars age this doesnt rule out anything.
The factory radiator does also have a heat exchanger for the ATF. In cold weather, it warms the ATF, and in hot weather, its meant to cool the ATF. However, Jeep also included an external ATF cooler on some XJs. The previous owner of your XJ may have added an external ATF cooler. The only place an external cooler can fit is in front of the AC condenser.
