Default Radiator explosion

The radiator on my 99 Cherokee Sport exploded out all out the passenger side. I replaced the radiator and the thermostat with ease. What could case this disaster? My initial thought was a stuck thermostat since I had to do the repairs in a parking lot.

Thoughts?

debris in the radiator causing a clog that super heated one spot then the pressure blew it apart

The cooling system builds pressure when hot.......rads go bad.......not unheard of at all. What kind of maintenance has it had over the past 12 years. Might be a good time to replace the water pump, fan clutch, rad cap, hoses, etc.

Factory Radiator end's are just hard plastic and if they get super heated they can pop. Did you get a factory replacement or an all metal?

I made a dash to AutoZone and bought their radiator (also plastic ends) and a new cap and thermostat. The hoses are in great shape.

I had to 'rebuild' the front end recently since 'maintenance' wasn't in the previous owners vocabulary. I slapped a new oil pressure sensor and a new temp sensor on it too for giggles.

Everything seems to be fine now.
