Quick engine questions - difference between auto and 5spd
Hello - my first post here - I've got a 1994 4.0L, auto, 4x4, that I have just acquired with a seized motor (previous owner ran it with no oil until it stopped) and I'm thinking the best way back onto the road is with a used motor. I've found one from a 1997 TJ but it has a 5spd where as mine is automatic. Are the engines essentially the same or am I going run into complications using the 5spd motor in front of my automatic? Thanks.

Might have an issue with the transfercase input shaft spline counts. Also the drive shafts are not the same length, Think the 5 speed is longer. Motors them self are basically the same and can be swapped, Keep computers with motors and tranies.

Yeah to be clear I'll be keeping the automatic in mine. I like 5spds but I don't think it is worth the bother to swap over.
That is great news if I can use it - hopefully I can get it for a decent price now. I was just hoping there wasn't a pilot bearing that is a pain to remove or something.

Pilot bearings are a breeze. Simply pack the end of the crankshaft with grease and insert a dowel or steel shaft (that just fits inside the bearing)....then whack it with a hammer. the grease can't compress and it will drive out the pilot bearing. You might have to re-pack it a couple times, but it works. Done it many, many, times.

Bugger - the seller is now ignoring me. He had no price listed and said make an offer. I make an offer and he went quite. I guess he didn't like the offer ...
Lots of 1990 models around for some reason. I guess I could take one of those and lose a few hp but might be a lot more work to swap sensors and such.
