Default Quick D30 axle upgrade question:

I have a 1987 HP D30 w/o the CAD. Will a set of shafts from a 98 TJ fit, and will they have the larger u-joints?? I'm starting to acquire the parts for the major front end overhaul I have planned. Thanks!!

Cool!! I was checking around town after I posted, and found a place that has a set from a 97 XJ w/o ABS. They will sell me the set for $120.00. I think that is a decent deal, you guys?? I plan on replacing the u-joints before I install them, with heavy duty ones.

I bought one for $50 so htat sounds like a fair deal. The u-joints will be the bigger sized ones

if you replace the u joints only use quality spicers. none of that autozone brute force garbage, you will thank me when they don't break.

and iirc you will need a newer dana30 inner seal to run those shafts as well

Not sure if it applies to an 87 or not but when I changed the ones out of my 92 and put in axles from a 98 XJ, I didn't have to change the seal. Did they have different models of d30's without CAD from 87 to 92?

91 was the last year the CAD axle was used, and was not used on all XJs before that. If you have a 91 or older with the NP242 tcase, then you will not have the CAD.

The only concern I would have about using the shafts from a TJ would be the width of the axle housing itself. It the TJ measurement from wms (wheel mounting surface) to wms is different than the XJ, then the shaft length will differ as well.

Other than changing the seal on the passenger side they will be a direct replacement.

No need to change any seals as long as you have a non-disconnect d30 as I think the OP mentioned in his first post. And the axles from the non abs 98 will definitely have the larger u-joints. HTH

Correct, non-CAD 1987 HP D30. I have a 242 t-case, which is why I have the non-CAD model. So they will fit, and be the stronger u-joint??

I did the exact same thing on my jeep and didn't have to cange any seals. From everything that I've read on this upgrade the only time that a seal change has been mentioned is when you are dealing with a disconnect axle. Also, every XJ from '97 on has the larger u-joints. The ones I used came from a non-abs '98.
