Is it possible to have an aftermarket steering wheel on my jeep? I have seen steering wheel parts kits on the internet but they all stop at 95. Im assuming its because of the airbag. But will the 95 kit work.

Yeah if you have air bags or if your vehicle came stock with air bags you legally can not remove them in order to remain street legal..This is why I decided I would have to stick to 91-94 XJ's...

Yes as stated above if you plan to be street legal 94 was the last non airbag equiped Jeeps. So you need to retain it. As Nick said there are starting to be aftermarket companies that are building steering wheels with bags for the growing market. I have not seen any for Jeeps but it will happen if it has not already.

So has anyone had problems with their airbags going off when they are 4-wheelin'? Just got a 98 XJ a few weeks ago and haven't had a chance to take it out yet.

Unless you hit something I don't think you woudl have a problem. I been wheeling my TJ for 4 years with no problems. I'm sure there's the rare air bag deployment here and there, but, like I said, unless you hit something it would be unlikely.

I figure I should mention this just in case. A forewarning to anyone who is thinking about removing an airbag: We set up a demo in class where we mounted an airbag to a stand and put a CPR Dummy on a stool with it's chest about 8 inches away from the airbag. When we set it off, the force shot it up in the air, about 60 feet back in our shop. When we checked it afterwards, all of the fiberglass ribs had been shattered.

If you plan on pulling an airbag, make sure you disconnect the battery and leave it for 30 minutes before even thinking about messing around with it. After that, make sure you're always off to the side.

I know in the 95 column and 96, the airbag is mechanical and can be shut off. consult your owner's manual...there is a plug on top of the airbag that you turn a screw in or something, but please consult the manual before just winging it and having the airbag explode in your face.

after 95 and 96, I don't know if you can shut it off like such, but I'd assume not much changed.

in 1984 to 1994 cherokees, they used a standard gm steering column...so any aftermarket steering wheel from a gm would have worked. in 95, they changed to a chryco column and I seriously doubt that anything is interchangeable.
