Default questions about changing Transfer Case fluid

so my cherokee has about 138k miles and i suspect that the fluid in the transfer case and the fluid in the transmission has never been replaced. so i was wondering if changing the fluid in the transfer case was a good idea. im way to afraid to change the fluid in the transmission because my jeep was neglected very badly.

any suggestiongs would be great
thanks

I would be more concerned with making sure the trans had fresh fluid, but suggest that you change them both. The trans takes Dexron III/Mercon, and will need 4-5 quarts if you're just doing the quick-n-dirty drain and refill.

What color is the trany fluid? If its black, id be cautious. You wont hurt the transfer case at all by changing the fluid regardless of its condition.

Dex/Merc... really good info, I thought mid 90's-on Chrysler used ATF+.

i would not recomend a tranny fluid change. especially if it hasn't been done at regular intervals. it is a long expalnation but the short story is... don't do it. search these forums or google it and it will expain why not to do it.

the color of the fluid has nothing to do with it needing to be changed. if its brown or burnt smelling then changing the fluid is the least of your worries. that usually means a bad clutch pack or worse. tranny fluid doesn't break down do to viscosity like motor oil does.

t-case is a different story. go for it.

The AW4 is a Japanese made transmission that dates at least to the late 1980s. While Chrysler made trans might use ATF+, DexIII/Mercon was spec for the AW4.
