Default Question on zj and xj transmission

I have access to a 93 grand Cherokee I was wondering if the transmission will fit in my 94 Cherokee. Trying to convert it to 4wd I don’t believe anything is wrong with the grand Cherokee just has been sitting up for a while

The first half of the 1993 Grand Cherokees (ZJ) used the same AW4 transmission as the regular Cherokees (XJ), so if it has the same trans it should bolt right up and work with the existing trans computer in the 94 XJ. The Grand Cherokee transmission used after the first half of 93 was made by Chrysler. I'm not sure if the later model continued to have a separate transmission computer (I think it did) or if it would be possible to just swap the controller over to make it work correctly in the regular Cherokee, or if you could get it to work correctly with the controller for the AW4.

If the ZJ has the AW4, you can use it. If it has the 42RE, then you cant.

I looked up the TCM on ebay. Different part numbers.

93 ZJ with the AW4 - 53009230 (listing for a 93 Grand Cherokee TCM - the TCM had AW4 written on it)
94 XJ with the AW4 - 56026769

I believe the different part numbers correspond to slightly different programming for the shift points. I do recall the connector was a different color (red maybe?). Pre and post renix controllers also had different color connectors and a plastic key on the connector so you couldn't plug the wrong "color" in, but it can be removed with an razor blade and plug in anyway.
