Default Question for those of you with manual transmissions in colder climates

My XJ has the AX-15 and I've encountered a problem for two winters in a row: If the temperature drops into the teens (F), the plastic bracket that holds the shift boot in place becomes brittle and breaks. The first time, it broke clean through. I replaced it with a junk yard bracket last spring. This winter the tabs broke off of the replacement. Have any of you had this same problem? If so, what have you done to help prevent this from happening again? I'm about to just start stocking up on these things if this will be an ongoing problem every winter! I'd rather have a metal one. Maybe I can rig something up.

The tabs on the front side broke, so now it won't hold the shift boot down onto the console anymore. At the bottom of the pic you can see the rear tabs. The front ones look just like them.

Ignore the nasty ripped boot on the transmission: I need to replace that too. The plastic bracket/boot retainer/whatever you want to call it snaps into this rectangular section:

Never had a problem with mine--Maybe you need to turn the boot around 180 degrees.
