First, do most snorkels have the same general bolt configuration as far as attaching to the car body?

Second, can someone recommend a good, low cost snorkel that would fit well on a 1988 Jeep Cherokee?

If you wanna spend less than 400$ your out of luck unless you make it yourself. As far as bolt patterns i dont know. The prices scared me away.

i made a snorkel for my 90' for less than $75 including the pvc pipes and joints and a nice apc filter. works great and i just welded a tab on the pillar following the windshield up and used a hose clamp to secure it. if you want pics let me know and i will send them.

Yes most snorkels will have everything you need to bolt it up. There really isnt any cheap snorkels so your gonna have to cough up the money.

It's not a full blown snorkel but it works great.It's a cowl snorkel and it cost me around $20 for everything.Heres a pic.I use my mirrors as a guage.If it touches my mirrors then I back out.

snorkels are stupid. they restrict air flow, you dont need to be fording 4-5ft of water, you have to water proof every electrical piece under the hood or theres no point for a snorkel. last month a new wheeler ripped his complete off on a trail. they are almost as good as bush wacker fender flares.

air flow is only coming into the vehicle through the inlet on the snorkel. stock its coming through under the hood. that inlet is larger then the snorkel inlet

also last summer we had a rig come into the shop because it rained for a couple days that water got into the snorkel and was in the air box. that could've been devastating

i play in rivers and lots of deep water , best thing i ever put on mine ..do tight tracks as well, few dents on the panels , snorkels been sweet as .. personal choice i suppose ...

so how did you water proof the cap and rotor? alternator? computer?

I will say this though. if you build your own and stick a filter on top of the snorkel expect to get rain water in it. i do like troy cowl induction snorkel thing though. that makes more sense

Unless the stock air box has been modified it's not going to have an opening any larger than any snorkel I've seen.I think the primary restriction would come from the additional bends in the snorkel.I've seen this debated a number of times. If anyone in the Kansas City area has a Cherokee with a snorkel and wants to find out if there is a power penalty (like I do), PM me and we will strap it to my chassis dyno and find out. I will post results here.
