I noticed that some Cherokees have a O/D switch on their centre console. I didn’t have one on my console, but is it possible to install one that will turn off my overdrive? Has anybody done this?

I don't know about this rocker switch but I do know about the Power/Comfort switch which I think they removed in later years.
Do you have any examples of this switch to show?

An O/D switch in an XJ?
In an XJ with an AW4 trans, 4th gear is overdrive. Keep your shifter in "3" will disable overdrive.
from the FSM:
"TRANSMISSION GEAR RATIOS
Fourth gear is an 0.75:1 ratio overdrive range. First, second, third and reverse gear are conventional ranges. Third gear ratio is 1:1. A separate planetary gear set provides overdrive operation in fourth gear. "

A switch to disable the torque converter lockup would be useful for my XJ w/ the hills around here, allowing me to stay in "OD" instead of downshifting to 3 to keep it from continually cycling through downshift -> shift into 4th -> lockup TC -> downshift, over and over again. There are times where staying in 3rd would be warranted, but that's a bit more complicated, and simply preventing the TC from locking up in 4th ,or allowing me to turn it off, would solve a good part of my "issue".
