Default Question about engine and transmission compatability

So I have 2 98s, one with a bad motor and one with a bad trans. I also have an 01 with a bad heater core, bad evaporator, bad cat/precats and some mysterious grinding I can't seem to cure.

If I put the 01 motor into the 98 can I change it from a coil pack system back to a distributor based system and still use the 98's ecm? Can I use the 98's headers or do I have to stick with the 01's stupid precat and separate header design? Is there anything else I would need to change?

As for the trans, is there anything I would need to do or is it just a direct swap?

Why not use the one good 98 motor with the one good 98 transmission and leave the 2001 alone? Then you're not worried about compatibility, all the ECMs stay the same, headers, Cats etc. If you put something newer in something older that's were the problems will start. Just my opinion.

That was the original plan but the 01 keeps developing problem after problem and I can't afford to keep dumping money into it.

So sell it as is and follow the original plan.

That's looking like my best option. Just have to figure out transportation for the in between.

Id do a trans swap on the 98 keep the other 98 for parts and let the 01 go to a new home.

Ah, gotcha. I was wondering why the obvious solution wasn't obvious to you.

It puts you out of a working car for a while. Yeah, been there, done that. Not fun.

Maybe sell the 2001 and use the money to rent a car for a while? Rent-A-Wreck can be pretty cheap.

Love the sig, by the way!
