Default Question about DANA 30 differential cover

98 XJ Sport 4.0

I busted up the cover of my Front axle when trying to remove it to change the fluid, so i need to replace it.

No parts stores ANYWHERE had any in stock or even know what the hell I was talking about, and the dealer wanted $100 bucks, no way, Jose.

So i got one from rock auto.

My question is, does the Dana 30 on the front of a 98 XJ sport use a standard rotation or Reverse rotation? Ill be honest, i dont even know what that means, but the only one that rockauto sells is the reverse rotation.

It says it fits a 98 Xj, but i just want to consult with you guys first. So, Am i good, or do i need to return it and find myself a standard rotation cover?

the cover doesn't care whether it's a reverse rotation or standard rotation axle - the cover will fit.

Just FYI - "Reverse Rotation" pertains to the way the gears are cut to work with the pinion position - High Pinion D30s are reverse cut, Low Pinion D30s are standard cut. Being a 98, you will have a high pinion, reverse cut. Low pinions were only used in TJs/ZJs and 00-01 XJs.

I just HAVE to know how that happened. Also, for the future, go and snag one from a u-pull junk yard. They're like $5.

Thanks for explaining that to me man, I appreciate it. I had a feeling it had something to do with that, but I wasn't sure how.

When I was unbolting the cover, one of the bolts must have been wayyyy too tight, because as I turned it, it cracked at the seam. Surprisingly, its not leaking, but i'm not taking any chances by driving it!

And I checked my local U-Pull it, and they only had one Cherokee and the cover was already gone lol
