Default Question about cigarette lighter adapter - simple

My son wants to plug a USB adapter into the cigarette lighter in his 1988 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer.

I told him to hold off until I could check it out. Tried searching the answer on the interweb before posting here, but nothing.

Question is this: Can you plug a power adapter into an old 1988 Cherokee's cigarette lighter?

We didn't have power adapters back then (that I know of) and certainly the USB hadn't been invented. However, I don't want him to plug in this USB adapter into his lighter and have it melt into plastic flaming goo.

I know, dumb question, but better to ask first and not make a terrible mistake.

Anyone?

Thx!

i'm sure someone will come up with a better answer than this :P, but the worst that could happen is blow a fuse, look at the voltage and watts that the adapter uses aswell as the usb, and the cigarette adapters wattage, etc. in my opinion i just think if it's too much it'll blow a fuse.
(p.s. don;t quote me on this, this is simply my opinion)

You should be ok. If you think about it, even for a 2000 or 2001, usb wasnt popular, especially for phones and charging.

USB standard is 5 volt max at around 900ma, however charging devices can pull up to 5 amps. You should be good to go

Cigarette lighter sockets haven't changed for decades, lol. 12 volts at 10 amps or so. The USB adapter regulates it down to 5V internally. It'll work fine.
