Default Question about 2001 xj

First of all, good to be here

Second, I have a question about my 2001 xj cherokee sport. We're going to sell it for something more economical (I wish it didn't have to be done), but there's something a little fishy with the car.

From all the research I've done, the only stock automatic gearboxes are a 3-speed and 4-speed, but I'm certain mine has 5. Would this be an aftermarket installation, or just somethimg I can't find? It had N2 tires from the last owner, so it wouldn't surprise me much.

I'm not a huge car enthusiast, but I'll answer any questions as well as I can. Thanks!

Way wrong way to start out here.....

ETA:
A baby polar bear drowns every time I turn my ignition key to "Start".

Transmission itself or the ID plate, even better.

Not my choice. I love this thing, does a little bit of everything, but 1) I'll only need it another year (college) and 2) I drive...agressively, so my mpg is horriffying.

2 big issues. It's dark out and I don't know where I'd find it...like I said, don't know a whole lot about engines.

I agree with 94XjSport94. My 2001 has the aw4, and every 01 that I have ever come across has the aw4. Never hurts to check. You will find a tab on the transmission that will identify it.

Tomorrow, look at the transmission(it's right behind the motor slide underneath the Jeep at the drivers door) see if it's oil pan looks like:

Factory AW4 Transmission, "4" designates 3+1(Over Drive) speed.

Global warming keeps my winter heat bills down.

Might be the TCC locking up giving the impression of a 5th gear.

Chances are whoever buys it just wants to know if its an automatic. And it's not a 5 speed so there you go lol

Well it shifted at 30/70/90/110 or so. Right before limiter I watched the tac drop again. That's as much as I know, I'll check the Id tomorrow

If the final tach drop is about 300 RPM, that's the torque converter clutch locking up.
