Which axle is in it now? Do you have ABS?

All XJ axles are generally compatible. But there are two different drive shaft lengths, and ABS is only on one model.

If you have the Chy 8.25 it is a 29 spline in your 98, a VG HD differential close to a D44 in strength. Good for off road use with tires up to 33-35x12:50's range if not beaten to death with a stock axle.

If you have the D35 with ABS its OK for street use/mild off road, but weak for much of any HD off road use or larger tires. Most who have these swap them for the Chy 8.25 (29 spline 97-01 only) earlier ones had 27 spline shafts.

Just my 2 cents... like many others I did the swap and am very happy I did. It was an easy, bolt in swap done in the middle of lifting it.

You can get one dirt cheap for usually under 200 at a good pick and pull. Just remember to include the drive shaft. The Dana is longer than the 8.25.

Good luck.
