Default Push Start Ignition?

Ok so my key ignition is starting to **** me off so i was wondering if it was possible to do the push start ignition even with the computer. I have an 89 4.0 I6. I know you have to run a kill switch and i think a fuel pump switch, but how do i wire the push start? please let me know what information yall have. thanks!

You probably need to replace the ignition electrical switch - it's a standard GM part, and it's mounted atop the steering column down by the firewall (there's an operating rod that goes from the keyswitch to the electrical switch.)

Yes, it's entirely possible to do a press-button start circuit, but it will only fix the problem until the contacts for the RUN circuit burn out - which is why I suggest replacing the electrical switch outright. I know it's possible - I did it with my 88, and it's remained as part of a security setup (I also have a weight/pressure switch in the seat, and a couple of hidden kill switches. It's worked - although I once had to haul a kid bodily out the window when I stopped at a 7-11 in East Palo Alto to pick up some munchies. I left the keys in - they wouldn't do anyone any good anyhow.

(Weight/pressure switch? Yeah - my wife has to have a sandbag in her lap to drive my truck - she doesn't weigh enough.)

I didn't mean to throw him into the brick wall, but I wasn't specifically trying not to, either. He probably woke up in a half-hour with a bad headache...)

You can do the press-button start in one of two ways:

1) Interrupt the START circuit with a momentary switch of sufficient capacity to trip the starter motor relay (about 150-200mA.) Use whatever style of switch you like, and mount it somewhere convenient. You will still require the keys to unlock the column and you'll need to turn the key to RUN to properly start the engine.

2) Remove the column lock and install two switches - one for RUN and one for START. Turn on the RUN switch, then hold the START switch until the engine catches. You will be able to drive without keys this way - which actually reduces your security.)

For how-to, I refer you to OEM wiring diagrams - if you aren't able to read them enough to figure out what's going on, you reall should not be attempting a modification like this anyhow. But, I suggest you replace the electrical switch first - it's your most likely culprit.
