Thanks for the advice.... And to answer why?..... Because I can... Lol... I was planning to pull the pan and valve cover on mine anyway. While I was in there I was going to replace the gaskets, oil pump, and clean the snot out of the inside.... Now I can just do it to the donor. I can still drive my jeep, just gotta check the coolant in it. It's not leaking THAT fast.

I'm almost as obsessed on putting in new rod inserts when the pan is off, as cruiser is with his grounds!
"and may your new pistons be snug"...Yea, you cut the oil jug side off after, and have a little plastic tray. Nothing "princely" like they have in AZ.

I've always used Ziplock baggies... I don't have an abundance of anything else to use... For $1 I go to dollar tree and I'm done.
Can this be done with the exhaust and intake in place?

I'm in the middle of the same thing. Don't forget valve seals while your in there. And it was a whole lot easier with the grill and rad out. I pulled the intake and header before I pulled the motor. With those out I used a offset boxend wrench on those 2 3/8 star bolts from the front. Had no problem getting at them or getting them out.

I think I might just rebuild the donor engine and be done with it....
How much should a machine shop charge to do the block work and install cam bearings, grind crank, install wrist pins and whatnot.

^^ Was tinkling along the same line. Not from 4.0 experience, just that if I had it in the shop I know I wouldn't be able to stop putting the manifolds on.

Hey now! whass al the fussin about!
me thinks the cruiser was just tryin to be rymin!
anyway, good ideas there about the bolt cleaning, I like it!
as I got a new (i.e. re-manufacutered 4.0) sitting at my dads place outside a Dallas, I do like the organizational ideas.
fuel for thought ( ah-ha)
anyway, Rubble good to hear ya again!
also, am rebuildin suspension over the next couple weeks, new shocks control arms linkage leaf springs, bushings etc etc etc etc.
I have bee pre-lubing all the bolts every day with WD, so I have no torque wars when i get my mind up to do this. Any other suggestions?
(BTW, not tryin to hack the thread, if it seems that way, my apologies!)
Cruiser, Rubble, any sites you know of I can get complete wiring harnesses? I been looking on the net and results have been skimpy. I ask as when I go to drop the new motor in I am going to re-do the interior completely, my harness is pretty darn old.
anyway, thanks folks!
doin all this prior to going BACK overseas again!
cheers!

Hey Cpn! Guess you've been hiden out. YES! Thankyou. It it a great trick when you are really getting into it. Cut a little slice, shove'm in. Granted a V8 has a bit more stuff to keep track of. Give'm a rinse, pour the solvent into the next, repeat, then cut out the side and there are your "trays" of cleaned bolts, separated. Pan here, rod bearing here, intake here, ect...
My B-day today! Took an extra helmet to go see Mary, (also lives remote), No luck so it's just me and some knife throwing practice. (to bad you can't make out what is written on the plate!)(narcissists suck)
If your harness is realty shot, hit some JY's...of course you know as well as me sometimes luck is unbelievable. I'll put in a note to the universe that you will walk right into something shiny as a new penny!
Whutdidyousay....Is seems to me about the best way to figure if it's a rear plug in the head is to shove something dry down in there, maybe wired onto a stick. (a rag, a diaper), leave it a bit, and see if it comes up with any wetness. Maybe someone knows something I don't, but it's one heck of a place to try to see if coolant is leaking down. Of course with cleaning and good light you can see if it's the side. You do know the inspection cover for the torque plate comes of with a few little bolts...

Well it's going to take too long to get my donor engine rebuilt, so I'm going to have to replace the freeze plugs with the engine in the jeep.
How many plugs are there all together?
What size are they?
How so you get the exhaust bolts out after they break?
