Exclamation Puddles nearly killed my '90 XJ this morning

Hey guys, I'm a noob here but I'm loving this forum. I just got my first jeep last week, a 90 Cherokee with the four liter straight six and auto transmission. So far I'm loving the truck. I decided to take her off road a bit after work this morning on some old logging roads up in the rockies in Montana. Everything was great until I went through a few puddles about two car lengths and up to the door seals. She ran fine till I cleared the lot of them (four I think) then died. I figured that I had gotten a fuse wet or something so I let her sit for about twenty minutes and she started right up. So I carefully drove her back down and died again after clearing the puddles again. I'm worried about waterlocking the engine. I'm not exactly rolling in cash, so doing a rebuild would kill me. What can I do to stop this from happening? It's near impossible to avoid three + foot deep puddles on the trails around here. Thanks in advance for your input.

I did think of that since the air intake is in the grille. I did check the filter immediately and it wasn't moist, but I wouldn't be surprised if just a trace amount of water got in and killed it. I guess it wouldn't hurt to also go through the electronics and perhaps re-route them under the passenger side of the dash.

Oh yeah, I'm avoiding that for the time being. Guess I'll have to use the 88 Nissan if I want to go puddle jumping.

Plan on trying to seal off your drivtrain as well to prevent failure
