The bottom half of my engine is a thick mess of old grease. Its totally encased my starter and around my oil pan etc. I have no oil leaks btw.
I guess scrapping the heavier stuff is first. But what's the best way to degrease it and what should I watch out for? Will it cause leaks?

Steam Cleaner and lots of degreaser. Will it cause leaks, NO. If it starts leaking after cleaning, it ALREADY had the leak. The gunk was just hiding it.

Do you like Simple Green over Purple Power? Read both are good, just curious because I own a gym and use simple green as my normal cleaner for benches and equipment...smells good...like Yagermeister..ha
full strength
Hose off
Does it cut thick grease?

I prefer Purple Power but Simple Green does a good job as well. I doubt you'll get it with a hose, you'll probably need a pressure washer. If you can hook your pressure water to a hot water source, you'll have even better luck.
