Vary bad tapping sound along with smoke from bay, gasket? Smells like it,
Also back fireing as well. Fun times, any help would be welcomed.

Pressure in his lower rad hose caused it to blow off, alongside heavy overheating if i remember correctly

Sometimes some smoke might be normal. Working on it some things might have gotten smeared or dripped somewhere where it will burn off after a bit.

As far as the running, you get everything back right? Take a good look at the vacuum lines and wiring. There is plenty that might have ended up different after changing a head gasket. Double check the firing order. 153624, with #1 @ 5:00 viewed from the side. I think 96 still has the MAP sensor up on the firewall. The little tube from there to the inside of the TB is important.

Hopefully the noise it just a lifter that will pump up.

I had a lot of smoke after I replaced the head on my '00 XJ but it was from burning of all the BP Blaster I used to loosen up the nuts and bolts. You also need to make sure you put the rocker arms and the push rods back in the same exact order they were removed.

Doing the head swap you've effectively cleaned all the oil off the lifters. Its gonna make noise until it gets lubed...

We made sure of that, put the arms and rods in a box, rods pusged through the top and arms labeled, but tbh it soumd like mayne the arms just aremt getting any lube?

Would it hurt to pull the cover, and pore a qt of oil on the lifters? They would be oiled at that point correct?

Default lifter noise

pull the dist and take a long shaft with a screw driver end ( I made one from some 1/4" pencil steel) and chuck it up in a drill and spin that oil pump. Pull your valve cover and see if you are flowing oil

Will do tomarrow, couldn't I just pull the vc and pull the fuel relay and crank it?

When I changed my head gasket I had a problem right afterwards but the problem came from the gasket behind the intake/exhaust manifold as I didn't pay as close attention to that as I should have and ended up with a vacuum leak from not tightening the bolts in the correct order and to the correct torq

I'm also curious what made you think you had vacuum leaks. As for the intake/exhaust manifold bolts, I don't recall seeing a tightening sequence mentioned in the FSM but it is always good practice to start in the middle and work your way out to the ends. And good luck trying to use a torque wrench on some of those inside bolts.

you could....but if your oil pump isn't working you wouldn't want to run your bearing with no oil at all
