Hi, all !! Some of you have seen and replied to my earlier thread on oil filter housing and oil pan gasket replacement on my 98 XJ and now I have a couple more questions.
In the past whenever I replaced an oil pump it has always been on a newly rebuilt motor and I ALWAYS primed the pump til oil squirted out the rocker arms but this time the motor is not new. Since the oil pan is off, I have decided to replace the factory pump with a Melling High Volume unit. The pump comes with instructions to dynamically prime it like on a new motor. Is this really necessary or can I just load it with some oil before bolting it in place or must I pull the distributor and spin it up with a drill or speed wrench? Is there another method? ..... a flatratin' shortcut or an old Indian trick for making sure not to starve these motors before the pump picks up? I don't want to fry this motor
Any input would be interesting to me. Thx.
Steve

My suggestion would be to call tech support at Melling and ask them but my theory is better safe than sorry , I would follow thier directions then if thier is a problem they would be more likely to help you out on it.

Vista I think it could go either way. The purpose of the dynamic priming of a new pump is to get oil into areas that are dry from a rebuild. So since you don't have that suituation it may not be required.
