ok theres two ways to prime the pump. pull all the spark plugs and turn the engine over w/ the starter until oil starts coming out of the pushrods (hard on starter). best way is to find top dead center, pull your distributor, and prime directly from the pump. get a long flathead screwdriver/ priming tool and put it in your hand drill. then use it to turn the pump where the distributor gear slides into the pump shaft. turn clockwise until oil starts coming out of the pushrods.

packing it full of grease isnt going to get the air out of the oil galleys. and i wouldnt suggest letting it run unless you like the sound of valves and lifters slapping. if you that weary just pull your plugs and use the starter, works just as good just hard on the starter is all, but since there is no compression its really not that big of a deal. i primed mine using the starter until it started smokin, then just pulled the dist. and primed from the pump. works easier.

ya you could, granted the 6th cylinder will still have compression which will make it harder on the starter. do you not have a long *** screw driver you can cut the handle off of? priming from the pump is the easiest and best because your not turning the rotating assembly w/o oil while trying to prime the pump. its easy to find TDC if thats your main concern. there is a small notch on your harmonic dampener that you simply line up with the 0 on the timing marks on the timing chain cover. to check pull your cap and make sure rotor is pointed to #1 cylinder on cap. pull distributor. using your flathead (roughly 8" flathead) and drill turn the pump shaft clockwise for about 5 min. until oil is felt coming from the pushrods. reinstall dist. and cap and your done.
