If you want the basic low down on what your search will yield, it is this. Oil is oil. Synthetics have certain "more refined" properties to them that make them handle temp extremes a little better and what not, but it all boils down to two things:
1) Is the oil doing its job of lubrication?
2) Are you changing the oil and filter at regular intervals?
As long as those 2 points are covered, you're fine. Hell, there's a guy on CF that says he runs Walmart 10w30 FullSyn and just changes it every 3000 miles, no prob. As long as the factory standards are met and the oil is changed, you're fine. It doesn't matter about the name of whoever sells it nor what color the bottle is.

Yeah... Oil is oil, just run the recommended viscosity and change it as required.
Walmart oil is good stuff, Depending on where you live it is made by WPP (performance oils) or Ashland (Valvoline)
Napa is rebranded Valvoline too.

Not so critical "what" brand you use.
Just use a name brand and use the correct viscosity for the environment that you are running your XJ in.
And change it at a reasonable interval.
Oil discussion can create a "paralysis by analysis" situation. Follow above recommendations and you will be fine.

You should only run Valvoline 10w40 with a Fram filter and change it every 5000 miles. Any other advise is wrong.
That should stir up the hornets nest.
