Pre-axle exhaust dump
I did a search and didn't see anything, so I was wondering if anyone here has modded their exhaust to dump before the rear axle. I'm eventually going to get JKS's adjustable rear shock mount, and that requires exhaust mods. The easiest way is to just put a turndown after the muffler. Has anyone done it? Do you get exhaust fumes in the cab? Too loud? Thoughts please.

I had it like that once. The exhaust drone is much worse inside and you do get the exhaust smell. I hate loud exhausts on DD's so i put my tailpipe back on after i cut it from the stock muffler

One thing you have to be mindful of is not having the exhaust from the turndown dumping right out on, or right in front of, the axle tubes or center section, as the exhaust can superheat the rear end and cause bearing and wear issues. Not to mention as previously said in the previous post, it is going to get loud in the cab. It is fun for about a day but then the new mod quickly loses it's appeal as soon as you have to take it on the road.

I did a turn down right behind my muffler thinking that it would be cheap, and make the jeep sound better... but i ended up hating it! Sure it sounded cool from outside the jeep, but inside it just got annoying. I could smell exhaust inside the jeep when it was idling and figured that wasn't the healthiest thing, and it got my rear axle very hot, and thats not good at all. So soon after i took it to an exhaust place to have a tail pipe put back on.... i'm way glad i did.

biggest problem i had is i spend alot of time in deep sticky mud. and when you belly out mud will block off the tail pipe and kill it if you back off the gas. i turned mine out the side behind the axle between the body and spring

Depending upon where you live and what the vehicle inspections are like as well, it may be illegal.
Most states with fairly rigorous mechanical inspections will require that exhaust be dumped rear of the passenger compartment of the vehicle unless it came that way from the factory. IE some old vettes, Mopars, and a few Ford trucks from the mid 90's..

I did this with mine i had to put a new muffler on and i put on a 26 inch glasspack with a turn down and i didn't think it was to loud inside and i can't smell anything in the cab. I would try it out and see if you like it.

Yea the deciding factor was when i was running errands in the city and after diving so long i stopped and got out and was light headed with everything spinning. That weekend i put the tail pipe back on. Ive had CO poisoning twice from that incident and from the furnace messing up, its not a good feeling being sick for a few days like that

I'm currently running mine straight out the end of a glasspack. It's not terribly loud and I can never smell exhaust in the cab even at lights with all the windows down. However, in the future I may run a 90* to keep it away from the axle after reading some of the previous posts, though I havent noticed anything out of the ordinary yet.

No issues here using a turn down but our XJ is rust free, no holes in floor boards. Side exit is a little quieter as u don't get as much sound bouncing back up off the pavement.
