Default power system problems

I need some pointers of where to start.

First off the lights, and any power for that reason, are only useable when the key is turned.

Second, the instrument panel seems to be accurate when functioning; however, sometimes the panel gauges crash and wont read anything until I use the reset odometer button or engage my blinker. the gauges all immeadiatly come to (seemingly) accurate readings. It can stay strong for hours or drop again within minutes.

Third the OBII sensor cant be read.

Forth the radio and odometer have frequent default resets that would be similar to removeing the battery.

The battery seems strong and in a cursory review the fuses all appear to be ok.

any suggestions where to begin?

Doesnt necesarily mean it doesnt have something going on. Pull it and check it out. Have it bench tested.

Ok I will deffinatly work on that. Sorry to pest and maybe my knowledge of the altenator is more limited than I realize but wouldnt the fact that the power can't be accessed without the key turned up be unrelated to the alt?

I agree with Xj88. Have the charging system checked out. Also check all of the grounding point and clean them. As for the gauges randomly dropping out. That is a very common problem. Next time they stop reading give the top of the dash above the gauge cluster a good slap. If they come back to life you have a bad connection and or dirty connections behind the cluster. You will need to remove the cluster and clean all the connections and put some dialectic grease on them and reinstall. Also make sure that the grounds back the are good and clean too.
