Default power steering pump problems

So I just put a brand new power steering pump and hoses on my 89 xj filled it up with fluid cranked it up let it run turned it off filled it back up cranked it back up checked for leaks looked good I backed it out of my garage and it had half a$# power steering pulled it out of the way put brakes on my truck cranked it back up and had no power steering the pump is turnning and from the looks of the lines u can't cross them up at the gearbox so do I have air in my system and need to bleed the lines perhaps????

jack the front up, and turn the steeringwheel from lock to lock, several times to bleed the system. remember to add oil ongoing. when it takes no more oil, then start it up and repeat.

good luck

And lock to lock is the best way to do it.

So I did like fl denmark told me to do and it did pretty good so I decided to drive it around my pastureand check out the pump and my new neon injectors well I got out in the pasture and stood on the skinny pedal and when I went to tturn my powersteering. Would jerk ( what I mean is would turn like normal then get hard then normal then hard this is happening while making the turn) so I care it back. Did you bleed it with the engine off? If you bled it engine running/lock to lock, I guarantee you have air in the system.

If you bleed it lock to lock several times while keeping the fluid topped off(engine off) the air should be gone from the system. If you're trying to bleed it with the engine running you must avoid the locks/stops or you'll reintroduce air/foam in the system.

I installed psp. On my 88 recently. Didn't bleed it. The air worked itself out pretty quick.

im glad you got the system bleeded. air in a hydralic system is not very efficient.

i normally tighten the belt so it has 15mm of total travel in the place were it span most.

so find the place were the belt span most, then lift it, then push it, the travel shouldnt be more than 15mm. otherwise, in doubt, then tighten it a bit more than you allready have done now, and then try to see if it slips.

its not good to tighten it to much, so easy steps untilll its fine.

good luck.

Mine did the same thing. Pull the pressure line from the pump and see if there's dirt or any **** floating around. Use ur pinky. Reconnect and bleed and should be good to go
