Im running into an issue on my "2000 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Inline 6 " Im just about done replacing my power steering gear box (bought a used one with low miles for cheap and it was the same one). I attatched the low pressure line and the high pressure line with the original ones and the high pressure line keeps blowing a hole in the hose anytime i start it or try to steer.
I've tried about 5 times and i keep blowing the high pressure hose right under the pump hookup.
ive been told to start it and then turn the wheels to purge it and that hasnt worked. (i am doing it with the cap on)
Am i doing something wrong? is my pump broken or the new part? What can i do
-cheers, wheeler

Does the return line flow well? or does the supply line blow immediatly upon start up?
Why was the gear box replaced?
try another gear box? could pump be damaged by debris, prehaps disabling any pressure relief? is gear box clogged? can you pour fluid thru the gear box?
it is recommended that pump and gear box be replaced as a set, along with hoses, cooler, etc... if there was metal bits found in the system, as those bits will be left to circulate thru the new component unless all parts replaced.
five hoses so far, $$$$$$ Id consider that gear box is clogged perhaps, or?
very interesting.
please more details.

You need to bleed the system. Prop up the front axle so that the wheels are off of the ground. Disconnect the return line (low pressure) and put a bucket under it to catch the fluids. I I use a clear hose and attach it to the return line so I can see the fluid color as it flushes the system. With the ignition on, but vehicle not running, have someone turn the steering wheel from lock to lock while someone ensures that the power steering reservoir remains filled and no air is entering the system. Never let the reservoir get low or empty during this process (very similar to a brake bleed) I use at least two quarts of power steering fluid to do this, some manuals recommend up to 4. Once the fluid is coming out clear with no air bubbles in it, you know you have flushed the system. Reconnect the return hose, Leave the cap off of the reservoir, drop the axle so tires are back on the ground. Start the vehicle and have someone slowly turn lock to lock, again while monitoring the reservoir and ensuring that no air is entering. Going too fast lock to lock will cause fluid to spurt out the top of the reservoir, so a nice steady pace is what you want. You may have to go lock to lock 15-30 times to clear out any air pockets. As you start this process, you will hear the system whining a bit, but as it works the fluid through and removes the air pockets, you will notice it calming down to a normal noise. Also, the fluid in the reservoir will show some air bubbles in it. I remove some of the fluid on occasion and replace it until it stops creating bubbles.
Best way I have found to bleed the power steering system absent having a vacuum pump available.
