My kids 98 XJ power steering is having issues at slow speeds. Like at parking speed. Basically the power steering quits working. Fluid looks at a good level and clean. Lines look good. Pump appears to be original. Belt looks fine. Is this a symptom when the pump is going? Should I just plan on replacing it or are there other things that can cause the PS to act up? Thanks in advance.

 

Is the belt tight?

 

It seams tight but I guess I can tighten it more. That's done through the power steering pump I think? How do you know how tight a belt should be?

 

A serpentine belt should only deflect about 1/4 - 3/8" when you put about 10-15# pressure on it

 

Thanks for responding. I'll check it tonight and see and snug it up. I was wondering if it could be the pump but will check the belt first.

I think you may be right. This XJ has been in the family since new but through three different drivers. I thought we had worked on the PS but looking at it it looks original. They appear to be a something that isn't too tough to replace.

 

A too-tight belt means a soon failing bearing. Use the correct tension. More is not automatically better.

Thanks for posting this. I did tighten the belt last night and the PS seams to be improved but I didn't think of over tightening it.

 

Not from the steering. The cat converter that sound like it is loaded with rocks on the other hand

 

whats the condition of the belt like?

 

I never clamed to be a mechanic... so? It looks ok to me. I felt the grooved bottom and didn't feel any cracking. Is there something specific to look for in regards to a serpentine belt and how it will preform. I guess the easy answerer would be just to put a new one on see if it helps. I'll look at it closer tonight. Thanks all who have posted to this!!
