Power steering fluid, atf or not?
Hi guys,
I am changing some seals on the steering box soon on my xj and have noticed the person before me has mixed in red atf fluid with the original Jeep stuff.
When it is drained what am I best filling it up with as I have heard not to use atf in the cherokee steering box?
This true?
Thanks for any help,
Liam

Have yet to change mine. Check your manual, if you dont have one grab one at your local parts store of off the internet. Im pretty sure its a special Mopar fluid

from my owners manual for my '95:
fluid type - use only petroleum fluids specially formulated for minimum effect on rubber hoses. MOPAR power steering fluid is a fluid of this type and is recommended. DO NOT USE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID.
hope that clears it up a bit

You can use ATF as a temporary substitute. But I wouldn't leave it in there for a long time, because PS fluid is more stable, when subjected to heat. That means, that ATF can cause a leak in the long run.
