Possible blown head gasket?
I just bought my '95 XJ from a guy for $200. He had replaced the open cooling system w/a closed system and had some parts on wrong. So I replaced EVERYTHING with an open system(like originally equipped). I spent about 2hrs burping the system. I have bubbles in the overflow tank and my temp reads just above 210*. The engine purrs like a kitten and does not miss a beat. Could I still have a blown head gasket? It was a concern of his to begin with. Thank You in advance.

BTW, this is at idle and the electric fan NEVER comes on. I have replaced the coolant temp switch also.

The electric fan is an A/C fan. It should only come on when the A/C is on.
I didn't think '95 ever came with an open coolant system?! But, if you're head gasket is blown you should have coolant in the oil or be blowing white sweet smelling smoke or something like that.
P.S. don't forget to get gas!! lol.

If you have a headgasket issue you will have coolant in the oil and will be loosing coolant. There is a couple of test you can do to check it,you can do a pressure test on the coolant which you can do or have a shop run a test to check for comustibles in the coolant.
The electric fan is primarly for the ac and defrost,it comes on either time those or selected, however it also comes on when the temp reaches 217 degrees and you are below 35mph. It will not come on if the temp switch is bad or the ac system is low on refrigirant,or the low pressure cutout switch is bad,or the fan relay is bad.
You can wire your fan to the battery to see if it runs,id it does then start looking at the other items.

Well, there isn't any water in the oil,and I don't appear to be losing coolant. So does the temp seem to be OK? what about the bubbles?

Thanks to those who replied. It was NOT a blown head gasket. I took it and got it smogged today w/o any problems. The guy that smogged it happen to have an infra red thermometer and read the temp @ the T-stat. It read 216* and just then the aux. fan kicked on. But my gauge was reading 255*. So I guess my gauge is not reading right......Oh well it will NEVER be finished. Thanks again.
