Default Possible 4wd question, I dunno.

Hi again,

With winter finally winding down here, I've noticed something new on my jeep. It's a 1991 2dr cherokee. It's the 4.0l.

It does have the front axle disconnect thingy on the passenger side. (my jeep buddy here at work showed it to me when I described the following to him...)

Here's the dealeeo..

One wintery morning, it was snowing pretty good. Of course, 4wd high was the way to go because none of the human clones in Utah can drive worth a..... upon getting to work, I noticed one of those "hot metal" smells as I went in to work. I was the only one in the parking lot so it must have been me.

A few weeks later, I'm noticing that when in 2wd, under power when turning on dry pavement, there's this odd lumpy vibration coming from the front end. You know when you drive slowly over rocks and sometimes a big one will pull the steering wheel from your hands? Well, it seems to be kind of like that, twice per wheel revolution either way I steer it.

It goes into 4wd high, low, neutral and back to 2wd just fine but I do hear a slight "clunk" when going into 4wd.

It doesn't do this when idling and steering it while not moving or under power, steering pump is fine, u-joints good, all seems well there. Driving in a straight line seems normal, no noises, no whining.

Could it be this axle disconnect thingy causing this? Will it hurt anything if I do nothing?

Curious.

Thanks for looking, if this post sucks, just delete it.

Kelly

sounds like an axle ujoint, but Im not sure about the "hot metal" smell.

Youre not using 4wd on dry pavement, are you?

No, not using on dry pavement. Just put it in & out just to make sure it still worked. (hold the commentary... lol)
